What Are The Different Types Of Projectors?

Although they may look alike, no two projectors are the same. One of the first things you’ll notice when you are shopping for a projector is that there are three types of projectors – DLP, LCD, and LCoS. This classification is based on the technology used in these projectors.

After the UHP lamp or LED creates the light, some kind of chip manipulates that light into the image we finally see. There are three technology types when it comes to projector chips: DLP, LCD, and LCoS.

DLP-LCD-AND-LCD-PROJECTORS

DLP (Digital Light Processing): uses tiny mirrors to reflect light toward the screen or away. A spinning wheel with color filters is used to create sequential color. Most projectors you see in movie theatres use DLP as it gives the sharpest picture with no motion blur.

LCD (Liquid Crystal Display): is quite similar to the technology found in most television sets. LCD projectors use three liquid crystal panels, each creating an image using one of the primary colors (red, green, blue) which are then projected on the screen at once to give a full-color image.

LCoS (Liquid Crystal on Silicon): is a relatively new technology and a sort of hybrid between LCD and DLP. It uses liquid crystal chips with a mirrored backing. So they are reflective, like DLP, but also block the light using liquid crystals like LCDs.

However, LCoS-based projectors are quite expensive, which is why you won’t find them in our Top Ten list.

Things You Should Consider Before Buying A Projector!

Light Sources

UHP (Ultra High Pressure) lamps and LED are the most commonly used light sources in projectors. Some high-end projectors use Laser as the light source, which works similar to the LED. However, these come at a premium price and so I shall not consider them in our discussion.

UHP lamps are high-powered light bulbs. These bulbs are capable of creating a lot of light and have the extra advantage of being rather inexpensive. That’s why UHP lamps are more common than LEDs. The only problem is that these lamps degrade over time.

However, this degradation is a slow process. All the projectors in our Top Ten list offer a lamp life ranging from 10 to 90 years if used for three hours daily. So it is safe to say you will not have to replace the lamp too often.

LEDs are far more efficient than UHP lamps but cost a lot more to create the same amount of light. That’s the reason why the LED-based projectors in our Top Ten list are on the higher end of the price spectrum. However, with technological advances, LED-based projectors will become much more affordable.

Contrast Ratio

The most important aspect of picture quality is the contrast ratio. The contrast is the ratio of light to dark in an image. It determines how real your image looks. In comparison to DLP, LCD offers a better native contrast ratio.

But how sharp and vivid your image appears is also determined by the amount of ambient light. If you are using the projector in an area that’s dim, but not very dark, you’ll need a higher contrast. The higher the quality of the medium, the higher the contrast ratio should be.

Brightness (Lumens)

The lumen is the derived unit of luminous flux,  a measure of the total quantity of visible light emitted by a source per unit of time. The luminous flux of a projector is one of its most important specifications. It determines how much light a projector can create, and in turn, how bright the image is.

However, there are a lot of problems with this spec as there is no universal way to measure lumens. The only standardized measure of lumens is ANSI lumens, which was established in 1992 by the American National Standards Institute (ANSI). But despite this being the industry standard, not all projectors use it to measure brightness.

Resolution

Display resolution refers to the pixel density, the number of pixels per unit distance or area. You are most probably familiar with the resolution if you watch a lot of video content online. When it comes to projectors, although resolution is important, it is perhaps not as important as you might think

Most projectors these days come at a resolution of 1024×768 pixels (XGA) or above. XGA resolution delivers decent quality videos. However, it is best to get projectors with a resolution of WXGA (1280×800), UXGA (1600X1200), Full HD (1920×1080), or WUXGA (1920×1200).

The standard resolution for Blu-Ray is 1280×720. So any resolution in this category or above will give you a good quality picture.

Additionally, projectors with 4K (4096×2160) resolution are also available on the market. But aside from the premium price, not all 4K projectors project true 4K resolution. So you might want to think twice before investing in them.

Keystone Correction

You might have noticed with projectors that if it is placed too low the image appears wider at the top or if it is placed off the center, it appears wide on one side. This is due to the keystone effect. Keystone correction remedies this problem up to a certain percentage.

Most projectors will have at least vertical keystone correction, if not horizontal. Projectors are available with varying degrees of keystone correctness. However, this only becomes an issue if you cannot place the projector exactly perpendicular to the screen.

Throw Ratio

Throw Ratio can be defined as the distance from the projector to the screen and the screen width. This will determine how far the projector needs to be placed from the screen to accurately fit the width of the screen. If you get a projector with an inaccurate throw ratio, the image might over bleed.

However, if your space allows you the flexibility to place the projector wherever you want, this shouldn’t be an issue

Connectivity

Most projectors come with VGA ports. However, if you are planning to use the projector for movies and gaming, then you’ll need an HDMI port.

A USB port can come in really handy, especially if you are planning to use the projector in your workspace. Quite a few projectors come with Wi-Fi connectivity which can be useful for streaming from all sorts of modern streaming services and products.

Some projectors also come with Bluetooth connectivity which can help connect external devices like Bluetooth speakers.

Portability

Projectors are available in various sizes and shapes with varying degrees of portability. The type of projector you need will depend on your purpose.

If you require a projector that you can carry around in your pocket, then you can get yourself a pico projector. A pico projector is small enough to fit in the palm of your hands.

However, you will have to compromise on other factors like resolution and screen size with these projectors.

Mini projects are slightly bigger than pico projectors but can provide you with better video quality and can easily be carried in a bag. Standard home projectors weigh around 5 lbs and give you the best video quality and are portable enough.

Frequently Asked Questions

While both projectors and televisions have their pros and cons, a projector can bring the cinema experience to the comfort of your home for a much lesser price compared to TVs. So if you are looking for a cinema experience for an affordable price, then projectors are better than TVs.

Generally speaking, the higher the lumens, the better.  However, the level of brightness also depends on where you are using the projector.  For example, if you are planning to use the projector in a dark room, 1000 lumens can give you a crisp, bright image, while 2000 lumens may be too bright, causing the image to be blurry and a strain on your eyes.

Projects come in different native resolutions. The highest resolution available is 4K (4096x2160). However, 4K projectors come at a premium price. The next best and most commonly used format is HD (1920x1080). 1980X1080 is a really good resolution for a projector and can deliver high definition image quality.

Final Verdict

We had to consider quite a few variables before compiling this list, which is why you find an eclectic mix of projectors. We have compiled such an eclectic list because each customer’s purpose is different and we wanted at least one high-quality projector that will satisfy your needs, no matter what your purpose is.

That is why, in this list, we have both LCD projects and DLP projectors, Standard projectors, and also pico and mini projectors.

We have included projectors with varying resolutions, contrast ratios, luminous flux, keystone correction angles, and even price range.  Even though they look the same, no two projectors are the same. But each projector is the best in its category.

All the ten projectors that made it to our list after a thorough screening process is worth your money. So all you have to do now is purchase away!
