What is the chemical makeup of Pool Shock?

Pool shocks are made from various ingredients. Most pool shocks use Calcium Hypochlorite as active ingredients, while some others use Dichloro-s-triazinetrione. There are also non-chlorine shocks that use Potassium Monopersulfate as the active ingredient. There is also liquid shock that uses Sodium Hypochlorite as an active ingredient. Sodium hypochlorite is a heavy-duty type of pool shock that isn’t typically used in home pools.

How do I dispense the Pool Shock container?

Most smaller packs of pool shocks come in non-refillable containers. As such these should not be refilled or reused. However, they should not be discarded carelessly as it can be acutely hazardous to the environment and is a violation of Federal Law.

The best way to dispose of the container is to offer it for recycling, if available. If not, triple rinse the empty container thoroughly

If the waste cannot be disposed of according to the label instructions you can also contact your State Pesticide or Environmental Control Agency, or the Hazardous Waste representative at the nearest EPA Regional Office for guidance.

Is it safe to use a Pool Shock?

Shocking is an essential part of pool maintenance. If handled properly and all the instructions on the product label are followed promptly, there is no harm in using pool shock. However, it is an environmental hazard if not disposed of properly, and is toxic to humans, domestic animals, and aquatic and terrestrial organisms. So make sure you keep it out of reach of children.
